Adolf Hitler made a personal intervention to spare a Jew from the Holocaust that consumed millions of Jewish lives.

Hitler made the dramatic intervention to protect Ernst Hess, his old company commander from the Flanders trenches of the First World War, who had risen to be a judge in post-war Germany.
In a letter from August 27, 1941 to the Dusseldorf Gestapo, Heinrich Himmler, one of the architects of the Final Solution, instructed the secret police to grant Hess "the relief and the protection as per the Fuhrer's wishes".
Himmler also instructed all authorities that Hitler's old comrade in arms was not "to be in-opportuned in any way whatsoever".
The letter was unearthed in a Gestapo file on Hess by Susanne Mauss, editor of the newspaper Jewish Voice from Germany.
Christened a protestant, Hess had a Jewish mother and that under Nazi race laws that made him "a full-blooded Jew", and a prime target for persecution and eventual destruction... [+]

German government fears new far-Right terrorism after neo-Nazi killing spree
The German government Monday admitted gross failures by the security services in dealing with a new brand of far-right "terrorism" after revelations of a decade-long killing spree by neo-Nazis.
Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said it was still unclear whether a small group of extremists who admitted gunning down nine businessmen of foreign origin and a policewoman had a larger network behind them.
"It is deeply troubling that there was no connection made between the murder series across Germany and the far-right scene in Thuringia," the east German state where the group was based, Friedrich told the daily Bild.
"State interior ministers are calling for better co-ordination between police and domestic intelligence on the state level. I strongly back that."
Federal prosecutors launched the probe last week after the discovery of a pistol used in the murder of the nine people in the home of a 36-year-old woman, Beate Zschaepe, a self-confessed neo-Nazi.
Wanted by police for questioning over an armed robbery in the eastern city of Jena on November 4, she had turned herself in after blowing up a rented flat in the eastern town of Zwickau.

Fifty years after the Berlin Wall was erected, the spectre of the Stasi continues to loom over Germany.

On August 13, 1961, 50 years ago this month, the Berlin Wall went up in Germany. This barrier divided a country, segregated families and separated friends, and its existence would cast a pall over the country for the next 20 years.
As a stark symbol of the Cold War, the wall existed in an era of fear, secrecy and heightened political tension, and those that lived in its shadow would know the painful repercussions of its hardliner policies. For what followed in the years of a divided Germany was a surveillance culture brought on by one of the largest and most feared secret service organisations in the world - the Stasi.
Founded in 1950, the Stasi was charged with keeping tabs on all the people living in East Germany, or what was then officially known as the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It compiled millions of photos, audio and video tapes, and paper files about its citizens. As a result, thousands of people were subjected to intimidation and torture by the Stasi. Many were imprisoned, while others were prevented from getting jobs or going to university. The aim was not only to thwart professional aspirations, but to destroy the personal lives of those that opposed the regime.
At its height, the Stasi had over 102,000 officers and nearly a quarter of a million of its own citizens spying on family members, neighbours and colleagues. In 1989, while the Berlin Wall crumbled, senior Stasi officials ordered the destruction of the files they had collected for over 40 years. Data gathered by the Stasi was frantically shredded to destroy evidence, but after protesters stormed the headquarters to stop the destruction, nearly 95 per cent was saved.
...As the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Wall is recognised, the spectre of the Stasi remains. While the files were only meant to be open for 10 years, nearly 20 years later calls by victims asking for their perpetrators to be identified are growing louder.
Jahn says time may be running out for the former Stasi who believe they have escaped prosecution. As a new project is underway to reconstruct over a million pages of files, many senior Stasi and collaborators may soon be brought to justice and a chapter in Germany's history may finally be closed.

La policía alemana desmantela una colonia juvenil nazi:

El campamento en Güstrow alojaba a 39 chicos que estudiaban textos racistas. Los 39 niños y jóvenes se alojaban en 14 tiendas que formaban un campamento en el apacible paisaje cercano a Güstrow, en el Estado federado de Mecklemburgo-Pomerania Anterior. Los niños tenían libros con canciones nazis y estudiaban textos racistas. Parte del campamento estaba decorado con cruces gamadas y otros símbolos ilegales. La policía alemana, que lo disolvió la pasada semana, es explícita: "Allí se cumplían prácticas y rituales de la época nacionalsocialista". Ya en mayo, las autoridades habían registrado las dependencias del grupo organizador, la Juventud Patriótica Alemana (HDJ). La HDJ es legal en Alemania y organiza diversos campamentos juveniles cada año por todo el país. Cantar himnos marciales, adquirir destrezas militares y desfilar con antorchas al atardecer son algunas actividades legales de los niños y jóvenes que se van de colonias con la HDJ. Sobre las prácticas ilegales se sabe también bastante. Diversas incursiones policiales y redadas recogidas en informes de los servicios secretos internos (Verfassungsschutz) han demostrado que la HDJ utiliza cruces gamadas y otras parafernalias del régimen de Adolf Hitler prohibidas por la ley alemana. De momento, las pruebas de actividades ilegales de enaltecimiento de la violencia y la incitación al odio racista sólo han llevado, en 2007, a la prohibición de los uniformes de la organización. Varios reportajes periodísticos y algunas peticiones parlamentarias provocaron hace algunos meses un renqueante debate sobre la prohibición total de la HDJ. Ahora, el allanamiento y disolución policial del campamento de Güstrow han devuelto a la HDJ alguna atención veraniega. El informe de las autoridades demuestra una vez más que los campamentos son meros conciliábulos neonazis organizados para adoctrinar a niños y jóvenes en su ideología ultraderechista y contribuir a la formación de otra generación de fascistas en Alemania. El problema de la ilegalización de semejantes prácticas y organizaciones viene de largo. Las relaciones entre la HDJ y el neonazi Partido Nacional Democrático (NPD) parecen probables. Cuenta el NPD con diputados en los parlamentos de Sajonia y Mecklemburgo-Pomerania Anterior. En 2003, un proceso de prohibición instado por el Gobierno de Gerhard Schröder terminó en un sonoro fiasco que afianzó al partido. Sus líderes actúan al filo de la ley y se presentan como abogados del alemán de a pie. Sus cabriolas entre la respetabilidad burguesa y el neonazismo más grosero les dan suficientes réditos electorales para mantenerse en aceptable situación económica y en el candelero mediático. ...más en El País

Castigo para un pederasta... trabajar en una guardería: La justicia alemana estudia el caso de un pedófilo de 41 años, al que, condenado a prestar trabajo social, se le asignó por su propio deseo hacerlo en una guardería y acabó abusando de nuevo de menores. Un portavoz de la fiscalía de Osnabrück confirmó hoy las informaciones difundidas por el diario "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung", según el cual el pederasta, que había sido procesado por abusos graves, fue destinado "por un lamentable error" a una guardería. La fuente explicó, asimismo, que se habían adoptado las medidas disciplinarias pertinentes contra la asistente social responsable de lo ocurrido. El hombre, que además era reincidente, fue condenado al pago de una sanción de 3.000 euros y, puesto que era insolvente y percibía ayuda social, se le conmutó la multa por 720 horas de trabajo social. La humanidad crece al asumir la responsabilidad del pasado: Merkel rindió un homenaje a las víctimas del genocidio nazi... La canciller alemana Angela Merkel rindió esta mañana un homenaje a los seis millones de víctimas judías del Holocausto durante una visita al Memorial Yad Vashem de Jerusalén consagrado al estudio y al recuerdo del genocidio nazi. "La Humanidad crece al asumir la responsabilidad del pasado", escribió Merkel en alemán en el libro de los invitados importantes de esta institución. La canciller alemana, vestida con un traje negro y acompañada por el director de Yad Vashem, Avner Shalev, reavivó la llama eterna en la cripta del recuerdo y colocó una corona de flores. Merkel, quien actualmente es presidenta en ejercicio de la Unión Europea, llegó el sábado por la noche a Israel procedente de Jordania, en el marco de una gira regional centrada en el proceso de paz en Oriente Medio. ...más en diario Clarín
